WordPress, Laravel or hand-coded: what to build your site on

NMNorthMountain 30 May 2026 7 min read

There is no single best stack — only the best fit for your case. WordPress is fast to fill with content, Laravel gives you custom logic, and a hand-coded front end gives you the fastest, leanest result. Here is how to choose.

The three options at a glance

OptionStrengthWatch out for
WordPressContent editing, plugins, speed to launchPlugin bloat, updates, security upkeep
Laravel appCustom logic, integrations, controlHigher build cost, needs a developer
Hand-codedTop performance, no bloatContent edits need a developer

When WordPress wins

If your team will edit content often — blog posts, news, landing pages — WordPress is hard to beat. A huge plugin ecosystem covers most standard needs, and editors do not need a developer for day-to-day changes.

When you reach for Laravel or custom code

Custom business logic, B2B workflows, complex integrations or a product with accounts and dashboards push you toward a Laravel application. For marketing sites where performance is everything, a hand-coded front end with perfect Core Web Vitals is the cleanest answer.

Decide by the dominant job: frequent content edits → WordPress; custom logic → Laravel; maximum speed and simplicity → hand-coded.

Frequently asked questions

Is WordPress secure enough for business?
Yes, when kept updated and configured properly. Most issues come from outdated plugins and weak hosting, not WordPress itself. We harden every install and set up backups.
Is hand-coded always faster than WordPress?
Usually, because there is no plugin overhead. But a well-built WordPress site on good hosting is plenty fast for most businesses. Speed is rarely the only deciding factor.
Can I move from one stack to another later?
Yes, though it is a project, not a switch. Content can be migrated; custom features may need rebuilding. Choosing well up front saves a costly migration.
