WireGuard is fast and modern, OpenVPN is the flexible old hand, and IPsec/IKEv2 has native support on every device. For a business network you often use more than one — each fits a different need.
The three at a glance
| Protocol | Strength | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| WireGuard | Fast, lean, modern | Site-to-site, power users |
| OpenVPN | Flexible, mature | Tricky networks, legacy |
| IPsec/IKEv2 | Native on every OS | Mobile, no extra app |
WireGuard: the modern default
WireGuard's code is tiny, which makes it fast and easy to audit. For high-performance tunnels between sites or for technical users, it is usually the best choice. Its simplicity is exactly why it has become the default for new deployments.
When OpenVPN or IPsec wins
- OpenVPN: when you must get through restrictive firewalls or support older systems.
- IPsec/IKEv2: when you want native client support on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android with no extra app.
Mix as needed: a well-designed network often runs WireGuard for site links and IPsec for mobile staff. The "best" protocol depends on the device and the network it sits on.
