WireGuard, OpenVPN or IPsec: which protocol to choose

NMNorthMountain 30 May 2026 7 min read

WireGuard is fast and modern, OpenVPN is the flexible old hand, and IPsec/IKEv2 has native support on every device. For a business network you often use more than one — each fits a different need.

WireGuard: the modern default

WireGuard's code is tiny, which makes it fast and easy to audit. For high-performance tunnels between sites or for technical users, it is usually the best choice. Its simplicity is exactly why it has become the default for new deployments.

When OpenVPN or IPsec wins

  • OpenVPN: when you must get through restrictive firewalls or support older systems.
  • IPsec/IKEv2: when you want native client support on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android with no extra app.
Mix as needed: a well-designed network often runs WireGuard for site links and IPsec for mobile staff. The "best" protocol depends on the device and the network it sits on.

Frequently asked questions

Is WireGuard always the fastest?
In most cases, yes — its lean design gives excellent throughput and low latency. On some restrictive networks OpenVPN connects where WireGuard cannot, so speed is not the only factor.
Which is the most secure?
All three are secure when configured correctly with modern settings. WireGuard's small codebase makes it easier to audit, but a well-set-up OpenVPN or IPsec is equally safe.
Do users need to install software?
For WireGuard and OpenVPN, usually a small client app. IPsec/IKEv2 is built into most operating systems, so no extra app is needed.
