SSO and role-based access for corporate portals

NMNorthMountain 30 May 2026 6 min read

Single sign-on (SSO) lets people log in once with their existing company account; role-based access control (RBAC) decides what each person can see and do. Together they make a portal both convenient and safe — the two things security usually trades off.

SSO: one login, less risk

With SSO, users sign in through an identity provider they already use — Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Okta. No new password to forget or leak, and when someone leaves the company, disabling their main account locks them out of the portal too.

RBAC: the right people see the right things

  • Roles group permissions: admin, manager, employee, guest.
  • People get a role, not a hand-picked list of permissions — far less error-prone.
  • Sensitive areas and documents are restricted by role.
  • Every action can be logged for an audit trail.
Least privilege wins: give each role the minimum access it needs. It is the single most effective habit for keeping a portal secure as it grows.

Why portals need both

As a portal grows, managing individual logins and permissions by hand becomes unmanageable and risky. SSO plus RBAC scales cleanly and supports compliance — which ties directly into GDPR obligations.

Frequently asked questions

Which SSO providers can you integrate?
Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 (Azure AD), Okta and Auth0 are supported out of the box, along with most standards-based identity providers.
What is the difference between SSO and RBAC?
SSO is about how you log in (one trusted account); RBAC is about what you can do once in (permissions by role). They solve different problems and work best together.
Can we audit who did what?
Yes. We add audit logs that record key actions per user, with retention set to match your compliance needs.

Building a portal with sensitive data?

We set up SSO and role-based access so it is secure by default — and easy to use.
