REST or GraphQL: which API to choose

NMNorthMountain 30 May 2026 7 min read

REST and GraphQL are two ways to build an API. REST is simple and battle-tested; GraphQL lets clients ask for exactly the data they need. Neither is "better" — they fit different situations.

The key difference

With REST, the server defines fixed endpoints that each return a fixed shape of data. With GraphQL, there is one endpoint and the client describes precisely what it wants. GraphQL avoids over-fetching; REST is simpler to build, cache and reason about.

When REST is the right choice

For most APIs — a website backend, a mobile app, a third-party integration — REST is the pragmatic default. It is universally understood, easy to cache, and there is a tool for everything. Do not add GraphQL complexity without a reason.

When GraphQL earns its keep

GraphQL shines when many different clients need different slices of complex, related data — think a rich app pulling from dozens of types, where REST would mean many round-trips or bloated responses.

Default to REST: reach for GraphQL only when client data needs are genuinely varied and complex. Otherwise you are paying complexity for nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Which is faster?
Neither inherently. GraphQL can reduce round-trips by fetching exactly what is needed; REST is easier to cache, which can make it faster in practice. It depends on the use case.
Can I use both?
Yes. Many systems expose REST for simple needs and GraphQL for complex clients. We choose per project rather than by fashion.
Is GraphQL harder to secure?
It needs more care — query depth limits, rate limiting and authorisation per field. Done properly it is perfectly secure, just more work than REST.

Designing an API?

We will recommend REST or GraphQL based on your clients and data — not on hype.
